Governor John Bel Edwards, State Public Defender Rémy Voisin Starns and LSU Law Professor Bob Lancaster spoke at LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center on November 3 regarding the Louisiana Justice Reinvestment Act. Mr. Starns discussed his plan to simultaneously improve the lives of indigent persons accused of certain crimes and reduce the costs of the Criminal Justice System by replacing criminal proceedings with treatment for Drug Abuse and Mental and Behavioral Health Disorders. This could change the lives of tens of thousands of Louisiana citizens whose involvement with the Criminal Justice System is more of a Public Health issue.
