Position Summary

The Chief Defender will primarily manage case representation, with related duties in vision, strategy, fundraising, training/teaching (legal interns for now, associates when funds are found), management, systems implementation, budgeting, policy engagement, media relations, staffing, community relations, activism, etc. These related functions are not prerequisites for this position, but are planned to be developed for a passionate, proactive, self-starting, entrepreneurial spirited personality who we will support in all aspects from courtroom struggles to sustainable self-care. The Chief Defender is accountable to and will report directly to the CEO. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

THE FEDERAL PUBLIC DEFENDER is accepting applications for an assistant federal public defender for the Capital Habeas Unit (CHU) to be stationed in Phoenix, Arizona. Attorneys in the CHU represent persons under a sentence of death in habeas corpus proceedings in the federal court. More than one position may be filled from this announcement. The federal defender organization operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 306A, to provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters by appointment from the court. The Capital Habeas Unit has staffed offices in Phoenix, Tucson, and Salt Lake City.
